Technorati: New Design Messed up in Firefox
Posted: Wed 05/23/2007 by ramiroOne of the websites I check early on a working day is Technorati. Today I was somehow surprised when I saw what you can see below on the screen showing the new design of Technorati viewed with Firefox version 2.0.0.3:
The site is completely messed up. I thought Technorati may have been hacked or they are cloaking but don't do it right.
I also checked the site in IE6 where it looks good. A somewhat typical Web 2.0 design with simplistic layout, rounded corners, and fading colors.
As a Web developer I know that one of the toughest tasks is to get a website working correctly in the commonly used browsers. Usually IE is causing problems but sometimes Firefox does too. The developers of Technorati should be aware of that and test their site in different browsers before they go live with a new design.
The problem is probably caused by the scrolling text on top implemented with JavaScript. When viewing the page source I noticed that Technorati is using the jQuery JavaScript library which is really cool when used the right way.
Update 23.05.2007 - 10:58
The developers of Technorati reacted quickly and fixed the problem. Now the site looks coooooool in Firefox:
Matthew Levine who wrote most of the CSS clarified that the problem was caused by a proxy serving an older version of the CSS. See his comment below. Thanks guys for the lightning fast reaction and congrats for the new design and features!

Should be cleared up shortly as well as the refresh continues to roll out.
Oh, and check out http://s.technorati.com/ I think you'll like it!!! Dave
I reloaded the page several times also logged out and then reloading it without any effect.
I just checked the site again and now it works well in Firefox.
The new search looks good but I miss the feature of restricting the search to tags, posts, and blogs
It's not a problem with Firefox or jQuery. There was a issue with one of the proxies serving a older version of the CSS. It should be fixed now -- reload and check it out!
As the guy who wrote most of the CSS, I can assure that that it was extensively tested in Firefox (as well as the other major browsers); indeed, Firebug and the web developer toolbar were essential!
You are absolutely correct, though, that cross-browser issues were high on our list of pre-launch bug fixes. Thanks for the feedback!
