Ubercart Products Recommender

We learned this lesson several months ago in our learning community for the Celebrate Oklahoma Voices project , but I had it reinforced again today on the Storychasers site . When you have an online learning community, a best-practice to avoid spammers is to moderate all new members. This can be a hassle, but given the persistence of spammers in seeking to join learning communities so they can post garbage there, it really is essential. As spam messages go, this one wasn’t horrific since iSimple Web

Browsing History Recommender
Published: Sat, 04 Jul 2009 03:27:08 +0000
This module adds two blocks:
Users who browsed this node also browsed
Recommended for you
To make the recommendations, the module uses the {history} table that keeps track of 30 days of users' node browsing history. Also, when you enable the "boost comments" option, the module then takes users' commenting history as browsing history as well.
The "Recommended for you" block provide personalized node recommendations based on a user's node browsing history. The basic idea is that, for example, user A browsed node X, Y, where users who browsed X, Y also browsed W, V; then "Recommended for you" would display W, V for A.
This module requires Recommender API at http://drupal.org/project/recommender, which provides the core matrix computation functions. The recommendation quality/accuracy are the job of Recommender API.
After install/enable/setup, please go to admin/settings/recommender to generate the recommendations offline.Research

Published: Fri, 03 Jul 2009 18:45:38 +0000
I’ve been working with the Drupal community on design projects for coming up to 12 months now - a splash in the ocean compared to many in the Drupal community but long enough to get a feel for how things work.
The ‘paid’ time I have left on the d7ux project is almost run out and I’m left feeling frustrated - not just by the work that I’d like to be able to continue to do on the Drupal 7 User Experience, but also by the great potential for building a critical mass of great designers and UX people in the Drupal community and the different types of activities that could spur this on, and the impact this could have on Drupal adoption and sustainability as an Open Source software project. So much opportunity, so little resource.
Despite the fact that I think there are probably a contingent within the Drupal community who are hoping that Mark & I are just going to go away once we stop getting paid for d7ux, the fact is that this is unlikely to happen any time soon. For various reasons and in various ways, I think we’re both kind of hooked on Drupal, or at least it’s amazing community.read moresparcool

I have been using FrontPage SlideShow from JoomlaWorks on a number of sites, and would recommend it as a good CSS/PHP route to building a featured slide section that links to promoted content, articles, blog posts, groups, etc. One problem is that it is not free, the cost is around $35 for a license to use it on 5 to 10 domains. A second problem is highlighted by the example of releasing an installation profile for Drupal. We can release all of the code under GPL for the project except for FPSS. So, I began working on a conversion of our FPSS slides into Views Slideshow views.read moreGreg Harvey: Calling A Custom Or Panel Page From Code (Panels 3.x)

Published: Fri, 03 Jul 2009 12:29:18 +0000
Views Display Tabs exposes displays in views as tabs, making it possible to switch displays for a view using AJAX. This makes it possible make a view even more useful as all overridable settings for a view can be stored in a display. This means that sorting, among many other settings a display can have, can now be exposed to the user through multiple displays with different settings.
This module and Views Embed are a good match!
This module is still experimental and a development version will be committed shortly.

This from the "build and they'll come," school of design and strategy. Allows freeform text sections to be edited individually, like MediaWiki / Wikipedia.
When a node is being viewed as a page by a user with permission to edit the node, this module adds [edit] links floated to the right of all headings in the body (see image).
Clicking on an [edit] link goes to a page where the content from that heading to the next same-level-or-higher heading can be edited in isolation.
The creation of node revisions is supported.
Using this module in conjuction with the Diff module will replicate much of Wikipedia's functionality.

Multi-column checkboxes radios
Published: Thu, 02 Jul 2009 20:52:33 +0000
Add '#multicolumn' property to the form element checkboxes and radios to make checkboxes and radios display in columns.
Usage
In the definition of form element checkboxes/radios, add the '#multicolumn' property:
<?php$form['my_checkboxes'] = array( '#type' => 'checkboxes', '#multicolumn' => array('width' => 3), . . .);$form['my_radios'] = array( '#type' => 'radios', '#multicolumn' => array('row-major' => TRUE), . . .);?>
If the 'row-major' parameter is set, then the checkboxes/radios are layout across and the number of columns depend on the container width.
If the 'row-major' parameter is not set, then the 'width' parameter is required and the checkboxes/radios are displayed down first, then across column by column. The width parameter specifies the number of columns to break the checkboxes/radios into. The 'minimum height' optional parameter can be specified to keep column from looking "short/flat" by using fewer columns when necessary to keep column height to the specified minimum.
Note: the check all/uncheck all in the screen shot is from the checkall module.

Published: Thu, 02 Jul 2009 18:56:11 +0000
JVIS USA LLC is an international supplier for automotive components and tooling with facilities in 6 countries and customers all over the world. Their website helps them introduce their products to auto makers.
Going multilingual
When JVIS commissioned their website, they requested just a few static pages. It was built as a simple static HTML site (no CMS) and in English. Very soon after launching their new site JVIS decided to localize to Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Russian and Spanish. These are the languages spoken by their larger clients.
At that point Jason Marshall contacted us about translating JVIS' website. It was already built (as a collection of 23 HTML files), ready to be translated. Our translation service would have produced another 92 static HTML files which JVIS would have uploaded to their server. It was clear that JVIS was going to be adding new content on a regular basis and maintaining it all in several languages without using a content management system would have been a very unwelcome task.
The likely possibility of turning a client from being happy to frustrated, due to this manual content management, concerned us very much.
We suggested to Jason Marshall, the web designer who built JVIS website, to first migrate it all to a CMS and only then begin the translation process. The first choice was Drupal, given its powerful multilingual capabilities. Maintaining a multilingual Drupal site would be much simpler, not just for us, but mostly for the client. From the client's point of view, only English texts would need to be managed. Drupal would automatically handle everything else.

From the review:
The book aims to get people with little to no knowledge of Drupal or JavaScript up to speed with creating really awesome functionality, really fast. In fact, its title almost belies the breadth of its scope: although the use of jQuery in Drupal 6 is the one topic that it covers exhaustively, it doesn't skip over any of the basic tools or concepts required to get going with Drupal, and so it would work pretty well as a first Drupal book for any aspiring front-end Drupaler. It covers everything from the ultra-utra-basic ("what is CSS?", "what is a Drupal block?") to Drupal JavaScript Behaviors (and everything else in drupal.js), to JavaScript Theming, to AJAX, to building modules with AJAX functionality, to jQuery syntax, effects, and even writing jQuery plugins!

Published: Thu, 02 Jul 2009 08:06:45 +0000
The RDF SPARQL Endpoint module indexes the RDF data publicly available on a Drupal site into an ARC2 RDF store. It also provides a SPARQL endpoint via the ARC2 SPARQL interface.
Because it relies on the ARC2 library, this module requires MySQL and will not work on other databases. The SPARQL module should be used instead if another database support is required.
RDF SPARQL Endpoint requires the modules:
* RDF - http://drupal.org/project/rdf (with the ARC2 library installed)
* (recommended) RDF CCK - http://drupal.org/project/rdfcck
You need to make sure the RDF data is publicly available at node/*/rdf (check the permission 'access RDF data' for anonymous user).
Why another SPARQL module?
The original SPARQL module intends to work in pair with the RDF module for Drupal, and will support any database backend. However its SPARQL support is not as mature as the SPARQL support of the ARC2 library. The downside of ARC2 is that it is MySQL specific (for now at least).Read: RDF SPARQL Endpoint

Published: Thu, 02 Jul 2009 01:03:04 +0000
When it comes to search, Drupal seems to do OK by itself. However, there are a number of supporting modules which will make your Drupal’s default search even better. These include Porter-Stemmer (english only), Search 404, Search by Page, Similar By Terms and many others.
If you’re seekign to help an advanced user out, then modules like Search config can help with that. But what about the user who won’t dare go into the hidden area of ‘Advanced Search’? This is where the power is - right?
It sure is. This is where you tell Drupal what content types and categories you want to limit the search to. This is where a user, simply looking for a job on your site, which lists information about jobs, news, blogs and other items, can focus their results.
So, why don’t you stop expecting the user to figure this out, and just make it happen for them! That’s what this video is all about. Using the default Drupal search box and forcing it to focus on specific content types or categories. You control what Drupal searches for and you control where it shows up!read moreMediacurrent: Remove or replace JS/CSS from a page

The Drupal Placemaker utilises Yahoo!'s Placemaker API to provide geo-enrichment functionality for your content.
Geo-enrichment?
There's a rich vein of location data buried within your content. You're sure to find references to towns, cities, regions and countries scattered about your node's body fields. The Placemaker module acts as a bridge between your content and Yahoo! Placemaker to parse, extract and index references to the location information within your unstructured data.
Why?
Once your content has been geo-enriched, with help from Yahoo!'s Geoplanet API and a faceted search engine such as Apache Solr, we can use spatial relationships in a similar way to Drupal's taxonomies to group content on the basis of the geographical relationships identified within content.Read: Placemaker
Node Reference Variables
Published: Wed, 01 Jul 2009 21:45:36 +0000
This module exposes CCK Node Reference fields in a variety of ways using the Drupal 6.x hook_preprocess_node() hook to populate variables that are then available to themers in node.tpl.php. Inline documentation:
<?php/** * Implementation of hook_preprocess_node(). * * Adds the fully loaded node object for each referenced Node * Reference node attached to the parent node, E.g. if you * have a Node Reference field called field_foo and it has * three values, the loaded nodes will be accessible using: * * print_r($field_foo[0]['node']); * print_r($field_foo[1]['node']); * print_r($field_foo[2]['node']); * * Also adds the rendered mark-up for the node, if requested: * * print_r($field_foo[0]['node_rendered']); * print_r($field_foo[1]['node_rendered']); * print_r($field_foo[2]['node_rendered']); * * Finally, adds jQuery tabs for each Node Reference field * value, rendered and ready to use in this variable: * * $nodereference_tabs * * Note, all options can be disabled at: * admin/content/nodereference_variables */?>

Drupal 7 usability: D7UX Information Architecture - A detailed view
Published: Wed, 01 Jul 2009 20:50:56 +0000
We’ve talked through the ’strategy’ behind the proposed D7UX Information Architecture (IA), now let’s take a look at it in detail. What goes where.
Let’s go through each major section in turn:
Content
The ‘Find Content’ page, showing a searchable, sortable, filterable list of all the content on your site is the ‘landing page’ for the Content section of the site. From this page you can also choose to Add Content (although it is suggested that for Content Creators this also be shown as a Shortcut on the Toolbar).
Different types of content can be filtered into different tabs, as comments are, for example, on this page. You may also wish to provide separate tabs for content such as Products (if you have Ubercart running), or Events or Projects
Structure
This section of the IA groups together tools used to ‘build’ content for the website which both have and create a User Interface (UI), including:read moreDrupal 6.13 and 5.19 released

Airy Blue
Published: Tue, 30 Jun 2009 05:42:39 +0000
Airy Blue is a blog-style Zen sub-theme created for Open Source Catholic in 2009. The theme validates as XHTML 1.0 strict, uses some beautiful CSS3 features (currently supported more in FireFox, Safari and Chrome than other browsers), and includes styling for most of Drupal's default markup. It has a 'light' and 'airy' feel to it, and matches well with Drupal's default shades of blue.
Included in the theme is the PSD (Photoshop) file for the header; you can re-color it and adjust the shading/styling of it if you'd like, and make your own header. Also, be sure to read the README.txt file inside the theme folder so you can take full advantage of the theme's features/customizations.
Theme Features
Web 2.0 styling - light and easy on the eyes
Valid XHTML 1.0 - Tested in IE 6/7, FF, Safari
Example of progressive enhancement - some CSS3 included
Up to three columns - small left sidebar, wide right sidebar
Based on popular Zen theme, so lots of documentation for modification
Styling for comments, user pictures, signatures, etc.

ADT Basetheme v2 is the basetheme for all new drupal themes on alldrupalthemes.com and the themes produced by the Design to Drupal service.
It can be used as a basetheme, for creating subthemes. If you don't know how to work with subthemes, the theme is also designed so that it can easily be stripped and modified.
This theme was not designed for use on a live site, but I added some basic styling and it at least looks decent, so if you're happy with the minimal styling it's ok for production use.
This theme includes a lot of code for theme settings and color module integration. If you do not wish to make use of theme settings and/or color module, you can easily strip the theme of these implementations by deleting some files and folders.. see README.txt for more info.

Bookstore is a sub-theme of the Blueprint Drupal theme (http://drupal.org/project/blueprint). The Drupal Blueprint theme integrates Drupal with the famous Blueprint CSS framework (http://www.blueprintcss.org). Bookstore currently works with Drupal 6 only. In fact it's still not IE6 safe. Besides standard compliant browsers, it has been successfully tested in IE6-8.
The Bookstore sub-theme is based on a design by Dieter Schneider of www.csstemplateheaven.com. The original design (along with the PSD) can be found at http://www.csstemplateheaven.com/business-templates/book-store/
Bookstore is a two column theme (left column, content column)
Installation
Install the blueprint Drupal theme first. This will involve downloading the Blueprint CSS framework from blueprintcss.org. See the README of the blueprint theme for details. Do make sure your site works with the blueprint theme before proceeding to the next step.
Uncompress the bookstore sub-theme inside the blueprint theme's directory.
Enable the bookstore sub-theme from your Drupal site's theme selection page (i.e. admin/build/themes).

Zen nineSixty (960 Grid system)

This is the NineSixty theme (http://drupal.org/project/ninesixty) developed as a Zen sub theme for use with Zen theme (http://drupal.org/project/zen) for Drupal 6. A big thanks to Nathan Smith for creating 960 CSS framework and Dvessel for the NineSixty theme. Without them this Zen sub theme would not have been possible.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What's different in this theme compare to the original NineSixty theme:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- It inherits all the theme settings from the Zen theme (like inline block editing).
- Added Debug mode (showing grid on the page) as a theme setting so you can enable/disable it in the theme settings page (/admin/build/themes/settings/ninesixty)
- Additional region added: 'content top' and 'content bottom' so blocks can be assigned to the top or bottom of the main content area.
- Installaton, please read the INSTALL.txt that comes with this theme
- Quick install guide: You must install the base Zen theme (http://drupal.org/project/zen) and then install this sub theme for it to work properly (place it in a directory like /sites/all/themes/).

I have a mix of Drupal 5 and Drupal 6 sites out there. If you've got any Drupal 5 sites, consider this book.
Appendices
I'll start by mentioning the appendices, since I think that's one of the most information-rich sections of the book. (The rest of the book consists of 94 step-by-step recipes.)
Appendix A – List of all default views available for Drupal 5
Appendix B – Comprehensive list of Drupal 5 field formatters, by module
Appendix C – Comprehensive list of Drupal 5 style plugins, by module
Appendix D – Views 1 hooks
Appendix E – Modules included in recipe ingredients
Appendix F – Additional resources and modules
Appendix G – Selected noteworthy patches to Views, sorted by topic
Appendix E can serve as an index to the recipes, and also includes a column indicating which modules are available for Drupal 6. Appendix G unlocks a whole host of functionality not available in Views 1 by default.
Recipes
Interesting content includes:
- How to overcome the case of the missing term in taxonomy views
- Views arguments
- Proximity search (Find every trailhead within 6 miles of a Senior Center, for instance)

Help us on the road to better Drupal documentation
Published: Fri, 12 Jun 2009 03:06:05 +0000
For the last few months myself and quite a few community members have been working on a larger vision for our beloved Drupal documentation. It has taken quite a bit longer than I had hoped, but I want to put out a draft of an initial "roadmap" for documentation that outlines our bigger issues and an approach to tackling them. I've attached a document which has everything we've hammered out so far in a 10 page document along with three appendices. This post is just a short summary of what is in that document and to let people know that we are gearing up to kick things off and really make Drupal documentation rock.
For starters, we've spent a lot of time identifying problem areas, prioritizing them and setting out some target dates. When looking at the tasks we need to accomplish we recognized that there are two main areas to focus on: the documentation itself and the community of people that create and maintain it.

The competition has served as a reflection of the quality work being done within the Drupal community. Of the 81 titles under consideration, covering a wide range of IT disciplines, two of the final six authors wrote books on Drupal. Aaron Winborn was recognized for his book "Drupal Multimedia" and Matt Butcher for "Learning Drupal 6 Module Development". The vote will now go to a panel of experts who will determine the winner based the quality of the author's work and its contribution to the tech community. Geo related documentation started on GeoJune.org
Published: Fri, 05 Jun 2009 21:34:33 +0000
As part of the Geo June activity, we've started a website to aggregate the work being done: http://www.geojune.org. We're aiming to provide documentation, demos of the developing modules, tutorials, etc.
To get the ball rolling on more formal documentation of all things geospatial in Drupal, we've started some Drupal books on geojune.org: http://www.geojune.org/documentation. The idea is to collaboratively work on documentation of not only the geo related contrib modules, but also deeper info about GIS and Drupal in general. The module documentation will be adapted to be included as d.o documentation pages; the deeper documentation, demos, examples will remain or be moved for potential permanent status for future development and reference.
Right now there are two upper-level books: One a getting started guide to mapping, the other a guide to geocoding Drupal data and storing geospatial data in Drupal. This division is loosely meant to divide the two types of contrib modules: display/mapping and geocoding/storage related to GIS work in Drupal. It is a suggested division at this point, open for discussion or further subdivision.
The mapping guide is empty right now. We'd love those involved in mapping modules (Openlayers, etc.) to start putting some pages here. The geocoding guide has some placeholder documentation related to the Geo and Geocode module as lifted from the documentation wiki page started here in the Location Mapping group by ultimike. We've started to break out that info into sub pages.
It's all rough right now. We need as many interested people as possible to weigh in and start documenting. Go to the site, get yourself a login, and contribute! Head into the #drupal-geo IRC channel for guidance or to ask maintainers/documenters for potential documentation assignments. We also hope to get a group from the Twin Cities Drupal Users Group Documentation Sprint on June 20 to take parts of this on as a project.
Thanks,
Barry Madore

When Zappos.com needed a content management system for its ever-growing content, it looked to Drupal after it was showcased at SXSW '08. Zappos.com built its first Drupal site, About.Zappos.com, as a way to test the features, capabilities and development effort of a Drupal site. With that project Drupal successfully showed itself to be both flexible and customizable and therefore a good fit for Zappos. Since then, Drupal has played a larger role at Zappos in a multitude of projects.
Established in 1999, Zappos.com has quickly become a leader in online apparel and footwear sales by striving to provide shoppers with the best possible service and selection. In 2008, the company’s gross merchandise sales exceeded $1 billion. Zappos.com currently stocks millions of products from over 1000 clothing and shoe brands. Zappos.com was recognized in 2009 by FORTUNE MAGAZINE as one of the “100 BEST COMPANIES TO WORK FOR”, debuting as the highest-ranking newcomer to FORTUNE’s 2009 list. More information about the company’s customer service philosophy, unique company culture, and job openings can be found at About.Zappos.com.

Next steps for Drupal 7 usability
Published: Wed, 27 May 2009 15:38:54 +0000
Improving the usability of Drupal is very important. Yesterday, I wrote about the progress that was made on Drupal 7 usability -- the community has made a ton of incremental improvements, while Mark and Leisa have been preparing mockups and wireframes that provide significant over-arching improvements to Drupal's ease of use. Combined, I believe these efforts could make Drupal 7 a great release. A release that the Drupal project needs since our competitors are catching up in terms of functionality and flexibility. Likewise we need to catch up in terms of design and usability. It is my belief that we can develop a user experience for our project that is game changing, and that completely resets people's expectations both for Drupal and our competitors.

There are only a few months left before the code freeze on September 1st. Now that Fields API has settled in core, it's time to extend it with some RDF semantics. DERI Galway is hosting an RDF in Drupal code sprint from May 11th until May 14th.
This sprint builds on Dries' ideas expressed in his recent posts Drupal, the semantic web and search and RDFa and Drupal. With RDF in the core of Drupal and RDFa output by default, it's dozens of thousands of websites which will all of a sudden start publishing their data as RDF.
So far, Stéphane Corlosquet, Florian Loretan, Benjamin Melançon and Rolf Guescini have signed up. How about you?
Some others are willing to come but cannot afford the trip until some funding is secured. To help us fund the sprint and bring more Drupal rockstars on board, please consider making a donation using the ChipIn widget on this page. The money will be used to cover flight, food and hotel costs for the sprinters. All sprinters are generously donating their time to make this happen. It would also be great to fly in a few additional people with extensive testing and Fields experience. Any excess money will be used to add more people, or will be donated to the Drupal Association.

As usual, this year's Summer of Code program had way more qualified students and proposals than it did slots. As a result there are some students with amazing potential who will not be getting directly engaged through this program. But- the Summer of Code isn't the only avenue we have to getting students more involved in the community, there are also summer internships at many companies (I know, for example, that Zivtech will likely be looking for a Drupal intern for the summer). So, with that in mind, I'd like to ask any companies/developers who are looking for interns to post the opportunity here, and for students who didn't make it this time to speak up if they'd be interested in a summer internship. Hopefully together we can make sure that no potential Drupal rockstars slip through the cracks!

Core patch review sprint on Saturday!
Published: Thu, 23 Apr 2009 18:35:18 +0000
Have you been looking for an excuse to play around a bit with Drupal 7, and have an interest in helping to directly shape it? Would you like to not only see how Drupal core contributors collaborate together, but become one yourself? Do you have an itch you'd like scratched and are willing to help scratch others' in return? Would you like to be exposed to new and interesting areas of Drupal you might not have otherwise experienced? Are you exceptionally good at finding faults and breaking things?
If so, drop by #drupal-dev on irc.freenode.net on Saturday (May 16) for a patch review sprint! (What is a patch review sprint? / How to connect to IRC?) While somewhat informal, there will be people around all weekend to help get new patch reviewers started and to help guide seasoned contributors to important patches.
Our goal is to try and knock the core patches to review queue down to zero (or as close to it as possible) by trying out patches to see how they work, and recommending ways that they can be improved. The Patch review sprints page has more information on how patch reviews work, a handy cheat-sheet of all the commands you need, and a list of prerequisites in order to participate.
Please note that "coding skills" is not on the list of prerequisites. While people with coding skills can perform certain types of reviews better than non-coders, non-coders can also perform certain types of reviews better than coders. In short: everyone is welcome!
Hope to see you there! :)

Welcome, accepted Summer of Code students! This post contains important information about prerequisites for starting your project. Please read it carefully.
Google has awarded Drupal 18 slots for the 2009 Google Summer of Code. This year there were many strong applications, and narrowing the field to the top 18 was not an easy task. Thanks to all the mentors who helped out with the evaluating, and congratulations to all of the students. We look forward to working with you this summer! :)
Although coding doesn't formally kick off until May 23, according to Google's program timeline, there are a few things that need to get sorted out first. If you have questions about how to do any of these things, don't be shy! :) Post to the http://groups.drupal.org/soc-2009 or ask in #drupal on irc.freenode.net, and we'll get you hooked up.
Create a central wiki page for your project at the SoC 2009 group. This wiki page should basically be a single location that anyone can read over the course of SoC in order to get a good sense of what your project is about, and where it is currently in terms of completion. There's a template you can copy and paste available at http://groups.drupal.org/node/21558. Add a link to your project in here
This page should be updated when you and your mentors reach a major design decision about your project, or if your schedule and/or deliverables need to be adjusted. Use the SoC 2008 group as a tool to help you achieve your goals. Ask questions. Find people to help you test. Discuss design decisions. Post mockups. Be creative.
Obtain a CVS account. The code that you produce during Summer of Code will ultimately reside at cvs.drupal.org, and you need to apply for a CVS account if you don't already have one. In your application, please mention that you are a Google Summer of Code student, so that your account will get approved quickly.
If you're new to CVS (or revision control systems in general), you might find our CVS handbook helpful, particularly the CVS introduction. Additionally, the CVS quickstart guide is handy to have around as a reference.
Create a "project" on drupal.org for your project (even if your delivery is an improvement to an existing module). Once you have CVS access, describe your project briefly in a README.txt and add a sub-folder for it to the contribution repository's modules/ directory, then create a "project" for it on drupal.org, following the instructions at Step-by-step: Create a CVS project. This will give you several tools at your disposal, including:
a central project page, which you can use to document your project and its current state.
an issue tracker, which you can use to break your project apart into sub-tasks and track their completion status. Using the issue tracker allows your mentors (or any other community members) to provide input on your development process.
the ability to create project releases, which testers can download and try out on their own Drupal installations.
There is helpful information about working with these tools available in the Maintaining d.o projects with CVS guide. Note that issue tracker and CVS commit activity will be primary methods of evaluating projects, and we require you to create an issue every week to report . These show us that you're making progress each week, and should be titled "Milestone X" and tagged with "SoC 2009 Weekly Update".
Meet your mentors and discuss your project. Please investigate which means of communication your mentors prefer. Communication is a crucial element of success, and you are encouraged to use email, Skype, IRC (http://drupal.org/node/108355), the SoC 2009 group (http://groups.drupal.org/soc-2009), the devel list (http://drupal.org/mailing-lists), and any other resources that are available to make sure that the lines of communication between you and your mentor are well established and open for the duration of the summer.
Ensure sure that any broad or project management-related changes are documented in your wiki page, and any code-related decisions/feedback is reflected in your project's issue queue, for the benefit of those who didn't have a chance to take part in your personal communication.
Refine the scope of your project. Discuss with your mentors whether they feel the scope of the project described in your application is realistic and clear. If there are ambiguities, try to iron them out. We're looking for clearly stated deliverables that you feel confident you can produce by the end of the summer. Update your project's wiki page with the result.
Plan on testing. It is a requirement for this year's Summer of Code projects to include test scripts. For most people the simpletest framework will be the best solution. See documentation at http://drupal.org/simpletest.
If you have any questions to one of the points above, your mentor will be able to help you (or ask here).
We're looking forward to working with you.
Happy Coding,
Drupal's Google Summer of Code team
SoC 2009Introducing Drupal's Google Summer of Code Students and Projects
Published: Wed, 22 Apr 2009 20:27:39 +0000
Drupal is excited to announce that we have 18 amazing projects in this year's Google Summer of Code. This is the fifth year that Drupal has participated in the program, bringing the total investment made by Google in Drupal through the SoC to over $400,000. This investment has resulted in numerous modules and core improvements, but more importantly it has brought in many long time contributors to the drupal project and helped keep numerous other contributors engaged and active in the community.
As usual we had way more great proposals than we had slots, but for the first time we have a father-son team (Jim and Jimmy Berry) working on SoC projects! Jimmy Berry actually convinced his dad to apply. We always try and expand the Drupal family/community with each Summer of Code, but the variety in projects and students of this year takes it to a whole new level!
This year's Summer of Code projects focus on integrating Drupal with other APIs, improving and enhancing many module suites, and helping to build new functionalities that will help keep Drupal at the cutting edge of what's possible with a CMS. Most of the projects still require co-mentors, and we'll be trying to connect these students with the community in a real world setting, so if you're interested in helping out with community bonding or code review, or even if you just want to keep tabs on the SoC progress, join us over at the Summer of Code group - it's not too late for you to help out!
Please help me in thanking Google for their support of Drupal and all Free & Open Source Software projects, and please welcome our Summer of Code 2009 Students.

There are only a few months left before the code freeze on September 1st. Now that Fields API has settled in core, it's time to extend it with some RDF semantics. DERI Galway is hosting an RDF in Drupal code sprint during the week of May 11th until May 14th.
Goals of the code sprint
The RDF code sprint will focus on Drupal core and aim at integrating RDF semantics in it.
Extend Fields API to integrate RDF mappings for each field instance. The semantics of a field can differ from a bundle to another. This can be stored either in the existing settings property or by adding a rdf_mappings property to the Field Instance objects.
Modify the Fields UI (contrib) to allow RDF mappings editing.
Define the appropriate mappings for the core modules, based on the RDF core mapping proposal.
Patch core modules with the mappings defined above.
Export these mappings in RDFa via the theme layer and keep it as generic as possible in order to ease the work of the themers.
Write tests for RDF in core.
Identify other non-fieldable entities in core which could benefit from being RDF-ized, and see how to annotate them. Comment is one example. Terms also, though they might become fieldable.
RSS 1 (RDF) in core. Arto volunteered to get started with that.
See a list of current open RDF issues in RDF issues in core.
See also the RDF code sprint wiki page where we will keep an up to date list of goals.
Discussion and open issues
Should modules be allowed to change these mappings via a hook_alter?
Participants
Stéphane Corlosquet, DERI (organizer)
Florian Loretan, HappyPixels (organizer)
Rolf Guescini, Cerpus
Benjamin Melançon, Agaric Design
Stefan Freudenberg, Agaric Design
Frédéric G. Marand, OSInet
Mark Birbeck, webBackplane
John Morahan, io1
This list is not closed. If you or your group have expertise in Drupal core development + RDF and would to participate, please contact me directly at stephane.corlosquet@deri.org. We are specifically looking for people familiar with the Fields API, theming and testing.
Sponsoring
We are looking for sponsors to help funding travels and accommodation for some of the participants. There are a couple of developers who are willing to come but cannot afford their flight without sponsoring.
Get to Galway, Ireland
You can either fly to:
Dublin and get a direct bus from the airport to Galway (3h ride) for 25 euros return or alternatively get the train from Heuston station in Dublin to Galway (30min bus + 2,5 train).
Shannon and catch a direct bus to Galway (2h) 23 euros with Citylink.
Galway and catch a cab to the city (~20 euros). Flights are more expensive and mostly from the UK only.
Ryanair and Aerlingus among others fly to Ireland.
Accommodation
Sleepzone Hostel (Budget): Backpacker hostel close to the town centre/Eyre Square. Friendly staff and generally hassle free in my experience, though can be a lot of passing noise on the street outside. Free wifi in the spacious kitchen and lounge area, plus an internet room. Basic breakfast included in the price last time I stayed. Some private rooms, or you can sometimes get a whole dorm room to yourself if you don't want to share. A decent budget option.
Westwood House Hotel(Top End): Just across the road from DERI Galway, on the outskirts of town. Quite upmarket. I haven't stayed here, but the restaurant is decent. Possibly a good option if you just want to visit the DERI building, but maybe a bit inconvenient if you want to get to and from town frequently?
Corrib haven : 5 minutes walk from DERI, a nice BnB. Bacon / Eggs / Sausages for breakfast. Not sure if they have single rooms, the price for a double one is usually 35pps. They have a wifi access, but not working very well. There's another BnB in front of that one, almost the same prices. Yet, as for Westwood, it's a bit far from the city center.
The Abbey House BnB - Just down the road from DERI, about 3 mins walking. Right next to the Corrib Haven (see above). The website looks a bit outdated, but the BnB is nice (I stayed there myself once).
Snoozle's (Budget): Another backpaper hotel in the city center (2 minutes from the new coach station). Not sure they have wifi, but it's brand new and really clean, at least in the lounge / kitchen, I didn't try the rooms.

We're stacking up karma points during this recession: over the weekend more than sixty people gathered at the DERI Institute in Galway, Ireland to talk, learn, and exchange ideas about Drupal. Various experts in web design attended coming from all over Ireland and as far as Scotland, England and the US. The best turn out was in absolute newbies - over half of the group who had traveled from all over Ireland.
As an incentive to push the learning curves we worked together to provide 3 Irish charities: Zikomo, Rural Science Association and Shadowbox Theatre with brand spanking new websites!
The plan was conceived 5 months ago when Alan Burke (alanburke) and Stéphane Corlosquet (scor) were brainstorming what to do for the next Irish Drupal event to bring it home to Galway. They wanted to do something different and make it over 2 days to take advantage of the presentation style of a BarCamp and to include a site-building challenge. Realizing they would need a great deal of help they recruited Stella Power (stella), Heather James (heather) for their expertise from organizing the previous DrupalCamp in Dublin.
We, the organizers, were impressed by the number of people who turned up as we expected 40-50. The rooms filled up fast and we had barely enough food for everybody. Alan had the insight to have a giant kettle available to provide plenty of tea and coffee with "loads of biccies" to all the attendees.

Published: Fri, 10 Apr 2009 21:30:15 +0000
Based on an email conversation I had with Darren, Evgeny, Aron Novak and Walkah I pulled together this roadmap for advanced OpenID features (attribute exchange, provider, etc).
The goal is to reduce the overall number of modules involved in deploying OpenID attribute exchange features, to expand on existing content profile integration, to remove dependencies on modules that are not used in all use cases and to push changes into OpenID and OpenID Provider where it makes sense.
This is the initial situation (April 9, 2009). There is fully functional support for OpenID authentication and attribute exchange on client and server. The multitude of modules is not ideal, given their small size it should be easy to consolidate them.
Proposed changes in step 1:
OpenID provider AX and OpenID provider SREG depend on Persona, Persona is therefore mandatory. Reverse this dependency so that provider implementations with content profile instead of persona are possible. For AX this is already done: http://drupal.org/node/399746, for SREG I just opened a ticket: http://drupal.org/node/430332
Expand upon openid_cp_field to make it an OpenID/Content Profile integration module with a mapping UI for both client and server. Currently OpenID CP Field and OpenID client AX do both content profile mapping -> duplicate functionality. This change will make it worthwhile to expand on the UI for mapping and it will remove content profile integration from OpenID client AX which will prepare the ground for Step 2. Patch in queue: http://drupal.org/node/428932
Proposed changes in step 2:
After step 1 OpenID client AX, OpenID provider AX and OpenID provider SREG are going to be very small API modules that can easily be rolled into OpenID and OpenID provider.
Benefits:
These two steps would bring us from 7 modules in the set down to 4 modules, they would reduce the number of [edit: contrib ]modules to deploy on an OpenID provider from 5 to 3.
Additionally, dependencies between modules would be cleaned up and content_profile-only implementations would be possible.
I'd love to get Step 1 out of the way as soon as possible and I think that there is basic agreement on Step 1 changes.
If there is agreement on Step 2 we could start working on it as soon as Step 1 patches are committed. Id' suggest to create a Drupal 6 2.x branch for OpenID provider and a Drupal 6 1.x branch for OpenID module to prevent existing deployments from breaking.
What are your thoughts?

Form Follows Fun: The Making of Digital Dollhouse
Published: Fri, 10 Apr 2009 18:51:21 +0000
Digital Dollhouse is a virtual world where girls of all ages are empowered to become their own interior designers. Members can paint, furnish and decorate their own virtual dream houses complete with plants, pets and dolls, and even purchase and regift items in a virtual economy.
Designed and built in Drupal from the ground up, Digital Dollhouse uses Drupal as a front- and back-end engine and Flash for the primary front-end game play. Drupal was selected as a development platform because of its robust and extensible framework and excellent integration with Flash/Flex applications. The high quality and availability of third-party modules greatly helped in the decision, as well. We found that Drupal is an excellent choice for managing virtual worlds with virtual goods and currencies.
The heart of Digital Dollhouse’s business model is virtual goods micro-transactions. A member can visit the online store (which Digital Dollhouse calls the “Boutique”), purchase an item and then play with it in a virtual dollhouse (which we named the “playarea”). Userpoints proved to be a robust and outstanding solution for all of our virtual currency needs. Digital Dollhouse is also greatly indebted to the developers of the Invite, Buddylist, Voting API, Ubercart and Ubercart Userpoints modules.
In 2008, Jesyca Durchin and and David Schnepp of Digital Playspace chose Exaltation of Larks, a development and design firm in Boston and Los Angeles, to lead the development of Digital Dollhouse. From the beginning, there were many indications that Digital Dollhouse would be a success.

Bonnier Publications A/S publish magazines in Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Holland. All the magazines have websites, some of which are quite significant and have a large amount of traffic and reasonable revenue, while others are simple presentation sites. Altogether Bonnier Publications (BP) has more than 40 sites in five different languages.
For many years, BP has used the Java-based CMS Polopoly for all their sites, but this has not been optimal and especially programming the sites was far too slow, even for the smallest adjustments.
During the summer of 2008, BP decided that their CMS technology needed replacing to enable their editorial staff and sales departments to take full advantage of the Internet's dynamic potential. They chose Drupal CMS, and Peytz & Co. was appointed strategic partner and asked to handle the platform migration.

As you may have noticed, Groups.Drupal.org is being upgraded to Drupal 6. In that process we are adding fun new features and re-evaluating decisions from the past.
After careful consideration we have decided to remove the ability to post private content to the site. As a result, we will be unpublishing all existing private content. We manually reviewed existing private content and it was either posts that could be public or which could find a new home outside of groups.drupal.org.
What you need to do with your old private content
If you posted private content, you will get an e-mail this coming week to advise you about this decision so that you can either publish that old content or know that it will be deleted. After Friday April 10th, this content will be unpublished.
If you have general questions you can leave them as comments here.
