A CMS is a software for creating and managing content collaboratively. WCMS are especially popular because they facilitate the creation of websites — at least they should. Usually there is a front-end used to display the content and a separate back-end for management tasks.

To enable collaboration of multiple users, CMS usually offer functionality for managing groups and users. Most modern CMS applications are built on a modular architecture to allow for integration of new features (extensibility) without affecting the core system.
